Dance Carib classes are designed to combine learning and enjoyment through dance from the Motherland's rich diversity of style and movement. Participants will acquire African traditional, African contemporary, street and bashment dance techniques in a fun and fitness based exploration of culture. Sessions consist of warm-up drills, dance piece and practice, ending with stretch exercises and feedback.

Dance Carib
is open to all abilities and requires no more than your committed effort and energy. Participants are advised to wear comfortable clothing and a smile.

Dance Carib Background

Dance Carib was established in 1997. We have a successful track record of community arts projects, collaborative arts projects, residencies, small and large scale multidisciplinary arts programmes. We specialise in the cultural celebratory arts, from art and mask, music and rhythm, dance and drama, to street theatre, festival and Carnival.

Project Aims and Objectives


Our AIM is to bring Art and Culture to the Community, by providing a programme of creative cultural artistic expression.

Our OBJECTIVES are focused on the delivery of quality cultural arts through a variety of artistic mediums.

Dance Carib Approach

The project has a multi-disciplinary approach combining African-Caribbean dance, drama, music, movement, story, script, acting, improvisation, drum, rhythm, percussion, sound, light, media, costume, colour, set, backdrop, art and design.

The programme also offers the opportunity for people to experience the performing arts to production level, grasping the elements of costume, lighting, sound, stage and audience

The work undertaken by "Dance Carib" includes open workshops, structured rehearsals, creative and technical arts workshops, performance, production, touring and residencies.

Dance Carib Project Structure and Content

We offer a unique programme of activities, with a wide ranging, broad-based programme, directed at enhancing the expressive potential of participants. Exploring new skills, developing existing talents and encouraging personal growth, group identity, pride and cultural expression, through a variety of artistic mediums.

Our project has a solid foundation and artistic vision, within the cultural arts field.

Dance Carib has a positive and creative track record, contributing to accessible community arts projects, whose emphasis is celebrating the cultural diversity of the local, national and international community.

Dance Carib Developments

"Dance Carib" has grown in terms of the range of activities offered; the personnel involved in the programme; the performance programme; the depth of personal and group development.

African-Caribbean Dance-Drama Performance-based group, who work together to select and develop the themes, story-line and script; voice-work, word and song; group work, drama games and acting skills; dramatisation and characterisation; mime and movement; dance and choreography; performance, show-cases and events; street theatre and carnival.

The group is led by professional choreographers, percussionists, musicians, dancers and those involved in the theatre, whose varied experience enrich the learning experience for the group.

Culture

"Dance Carib" explores culture through the arts.

"Dance Carib" has African-Caribbean roots, tackling issues of concern to the African-Caribbean community and providing a forum for the exploration of cultural heritage.

"Dance Carib" is essentially a multi-cultural phenomenon reaching beyond the confines of categories, and is open to all with a positive interest in the cultural arts.

"Dance Carib"has a database of professional international artists, musicians and choreographers, with whom we have worked with over a number of years.

Dance Carib Creative Team

Arts Practitioners

Specialist support for the development of cultural arts activity takes the form of professional dancers, choreographers, musicians and artists working alongside the participants, supporting and nurturing creative potential.

The first Choreographer

Dada Ogunledun was born in Britain and trained in Theatre Arts at the University of Nigeria. Her performance work in the UK includes dance, choreography and acting. Dada has conducted workshops for Oval House, in schools and colleges. She has also taught dance at Yaa Asantewaa, for the Black British Dance Festival and performed with the Contemporary African Dance company and Badejo Arts on their regional tour of 'So What' culminating at the Royal Festival Hall. In 2002 Dada left Dance Carib to pursue her theatrical and dance career.

The Master Drummer
John Akoto Annan was born in Ghana and started dancing at twelve. He performed with various traditional groups including Shida Dance group and Kusum group. Akoto came to the UK and joined Adzido in 2002, and became the second choreographer and percussionist with Dance Carib in 2004. Presently Akoto is Dance Carib's director of music and dance.

Kent James was born in Trinidad and since 2000 has led Drum Carib. Kent brings the Caribbean rhythms to the group, and has developed the musical contributions to street performance, festivals and carnival.

Drum Carib

Drum Carib provides the music and rhythms for Dance Carib.
Established in 1997, based on Garifuna rhythms, taught by Pen Cayetano, and developed by musicians in the UK and Caribbean. Pen's teacher was the Great Garifuna Drummer Isabel Flores.
Drum Carib performs in its own right at cultural and community events.

The Garifuna Drummer

Rocko Whiskey learnt the Garifuna rhythms from Pen, and has gone on to spread these rhythms in St. Vincent in the Caribbean and in the UK with Drum Carib.
